Professional stoneware ceramics

Imperfect ceramics. Perfect process.

We use Stoneware clay, mainly PRAI, a white refractory clay with impalpable grog and PRAF with fine grog.
Some of our pieces are porcelain, although it is perfect on the wheel, also handmade with the coil technique, it offers surprisingly pleasant results, mainly because of the special feel of those pieces.

Using a rolling pin, we knead the clay until we form a base on which we start to create a piece. In this process it is important to eliminate any air bubbles that might be in the clay.

Once the stoneware clay is ready, and slightly drier, the process of creating the pieces is started, using the coiling technique or with slabs, often using objects I have at home, which are a source of inspiration.

Once the shape of the piece has been defined, it is profiled, burnished, buffed and defined with several tools and the magic of a sponge with a bit of water. At this stage the piece should be leather hard, which means it is drier but still humid enough for it to be flexible and be manipulated.

Without any doubt, the most interesting part of the process.

After the piece has dried, the bisque firing takes place, which means it is fired in the kiln for at least 8 hours at about 980º C.
When the pieces comes out of the bisque firing, the sanding takes place, and after that, with a humid sponge, we remove all remaining dust, Then it will be ready for the next stage of the creative process.

The most critical moment is the glazing of the pieces, in other words: adding colour to them. For this we use glazing in different colours, slips and pigments.

After glazing the piece, it returns to the kiln, for about another 8 hours, at a high temperature. At this moment we are very close to the final process of creating a stoneware piece.

The best of feelings is seeing the result, that you can never quite fully control, which is part of the magic of ceramics. Fire, fused with clay and the different colours, achieve always surprising results. In an unconscious way, handmade ceramics, work on your emotions. It is a wonderful therapy for personal improvement and growth.
